Session 2 Grammar: Expressing the origin of a belief
Sophisticated thinkers don't just state what they believe — they can trace where those beliefs came from. These structures let you connect your convictions to your history, upbringing, and experience.
Grammar Focus
"I was raised to believe..." / "Growing up, I always thought..." / "My experience has led me to..."
Beliefs don't appear from nowhere — they are shaped by family, culture, community, and experience. English has several structures for naming those sources honestly. "I was raised to believe..." uses the passive to signal that a belief was instilled in you rather than chosen — it invites reflection on whether you've examined it since. "Growing up, I always thought..." is a time-anchored framing that implies your views may have evolved. "My experience has led me to..." uses the present perfect to suggest an ongoing process of formation — experience as a continuous teacher. These structures are not excuses; they are tools for intellectual self-awareness.
"I was raised to believe that hard work always pays off — and I've spent years testing whether that's actually true." (passive upbringing + reflective follow-up)
"Growing up, I always thought that people who disagreed with my family were simply wrong." (childhood assumption, now questioned)
"My experience has led me to believe that institutions are more fragile than we like to think." (experience-formed conviction)
"The environment I grew up in shaped my assumption that education was the path out of poverty." (environment as shaper of belief)
"I came to this view through years of working in emergency medicine — it wasn't something I read in a book." (professional experience as source)
"My parents instilled in me the idea that you never discuss money or politics at the dinner table." (explicit transmission of belief)
