Session 12 Grammar: Discussing religion in modern contexts

English has developed a rich vocabulary for talking about religion's changing role in contemporary society — secularization, revival, and everything in between.

Grammar Focus
"In an increasingly secular society..." / "Despite declining church attendance..." / "Religion remains a powerful force in..."
Discussing religion in contemporary life requires structures that acknowledge both its retreat from public life in some contexts and its persistent — even growing — power in others. Three key grammatical frames handle this complexity:

1. Trend framing with adverbials — "In an increasingly secular society...", "As religiosity declines in Western Europe...", "With the rise of the nones (those with no religious affiliation)..." These prepositional or subordinate clause openers set a social backdrop before making a claim.

2. Concessive framing — "Despite declining church attendance...", "Even as formal religious practice fades...", "Notwithstanding the rise of secularism..." These structures use concession to introduce a surprising or countervailing fact. They are especially useful for capturing paradoxes: attendance is down, but belief persists; institutions are shrinking, but influence remains.

3. Persistence framing — "Religion remains a powerful force in...", "Faith continues to shape...", "The influence of religion on [politics / culture / law] has not diminished..." These structures make an affirmative claim about religion's ongoing relevance, often against the assumption that modernity has displaced it.
"In an increasingly secular society, religious institutions have had to reframe their public role — from moral authority to service provider."
"Despite declining church attendance in the United States, personal belief in God has remained relatively stable for decades."
"Religion remains a powerful force in American politics, where evangelical voters have shaped both parties' platforms on abortion, same-sex marriage, and school prayer."
"Even as formal religious observance fades among younger generations, interest in spirituality, meditation, and meaning-making appears to be growing."
"Notwithstanding the assumption that modernity drives secularization, the world as a whole is becoming more religious, not less — driven by demographic trends in Africa, Latin America, and South Asia."
"As the number of religiously unaffiliated Americans grows, questions about the role of faith in public life have become more contested, not less."
Variations to practice
Use the concessive frame to describe a surprising fact about religion in your own country or context: "Despite X, Y remains true." Practice opening a paragraph with a trend framing and then using a persistence framing to complicate it. Compare how this topic would be discussed differently in a secular European context vs. a deeply religious African or Latin American context — what changes in the grammar of assumptions?
