Section 3 — Religion and Faith 6 discussion questions

Session 9 Discussion: What is religion?

Use these questions to practice discussing the definition, function, and diversity of religion in English. The goal is to think critically, argue clearly, and express yourself with confidence.

Question 1

How would you define religion? Does your definition include belief in God — or can someone be deeply religious without believing in a god at all? Where does religion end and philosophy or culture begin?

Try to use: definition, sacred, ritual, transcendent, secular

Question 2

Religion serves many functions — community, meaning, comfort, moral guidance, identity. If a person gets all of those things from somewhere else — family, philosophy, sport, art — do they need religion? What would be lost?

Try to use: function, community, meaning, substitute, fulfill

Question 3

There are thousands of religions in the world, each claiming to offer truth or a path to it. Does this diversity make you more or less confident in any single religion's claims? Or does it tell us something important about human nature?

Try to use: diversity, claim, relativism, universal, human need

Question 4

Is religion something you are born into — an identity inherited from family and culture — or is it something you freely choose? Can you truly choose a religion, or does it have to feel like it found you?

Try to use: inherited, convert, authentic, identity, choose

Question 5

Throughout history, religion has been used both to liberate people and to oppress them. Does that mixed record change how you evaluate religion as a force in the world — or do you judge religions individually rather than as a category?

Try to use: institution, liberation, oppression, historical, assess

Question 6

Could something like nationalism, environmentalism, or even fandom function as a religion for some people — providing ritual, community, sacred texts, and a sense of ultimate meaning? Where do you draw the line between religion and ideology?

Try to use: ideology, ritual, devotion, secular religion, quasi-religious
