Session 14 Discussion: Tribe and belonging

Use these questions to practice discussing how community shapes belief in English. The goal is to think critically, argue clearly, and express yourself with confidence.

Question 1

Humans are intensely tribal — we form groups, define insiders and outsiders, and often adopt the beliefs of our group without question. Is tribalism something we should fight against — or is it a fundamental part of being human that we need to work with?

Try to use: tribalism, in-group, out-group, instinct, overcome

Question 2

Have you ever held back an opinion because you knew it would go against what your community, family, or social group believed? What does that moment of self-censorship tell us about the relationship between belonging and belief?

Try to use: self-censor, conform, social cost, belonging, suppress

Question 3

Online communities can reinforce beliefs even more powerfully than physical ones — algorithms feed us content that matches what we already believe, and social approval comes from agreeing with the group. Are online communities making us more tribal, not less?

Try to use: echo chamber, reinforce, algorithm, validation, tribalism

Question 4

What happens when a person's beliefs put them at odds with their own community — their family, religion, or culture? Is it possible to maintain those relationships while holding fundamentally different beliefs? What does it cost?

Try to use: dissent, estrangement, navigate, tension, belonging

Question 5

Sports fans, political parties, religious congregations, and online fandoms all create powerful senses of belonging. Are these communities healthy — giving people identity and purpose — or do they demand too high a price in terms of independent thinking?

Try to use: loyalty, identity, demand, independent, trade-off

Question 6

Is it possible to feel genuine belonging in a diverse community — one where people hold very different beliefs? Or does real belonging require a shared set of core beliefs? What kind of community do you most want to be part of?

Try to use: diversity, shared values, cohesion, tolerance, genuine
