Session 11 Grammar: Reported speech and attribution in news writing

How a journalist attributes a statement — and which verb they choose — carries enormous meaning. "Said", "claimed", "alleged", and "denied" are not interchangeable.

Grammar Focus
[Source] + [reporting verb] + [that + clause] OR [According to / As per] + [source], + [claim]
Reported speech in journalism is never neutral. Every reporting verb signals how much the journalist trusts — or distances themselves from — the statement being attributed. The choice of verb reveals editorial judgment:

said — neutral; the journalist is not endorsing or questioning the claim
claimed / alleged — the journalist is distancing themselves; the statement is unverified or contested
admitted / conceded — implies the speaker is acknowledging something reluctantly or against their interest
insisted / maintained — implies the speaker is holding a position others dispute
denied — used for direct rejections of an accusation
according to — neutral attribution, very common in news copy

When reading news, always ask: Why did the journalist choose this verb and not another?
"The minister said the decision had been taken in the national interest." (neutral — no implicit judgment from the journalist)
"The company claimed it had been unaware of the safety violations for years." (distanced — the journalist is not confirming the claim)
"The suspect denied all knowledge of the missing funds." (a direct denial of a specific allegation)
"According to witnesses, the police opened fire without warning." (attribution to multiple unnamed sources — common but problematic)
"The official admitted that internal warnings had been ignored." ("admitted" implies reluctance — a significant editorial choice)
"The government insisted the process had been fully transparent, despite evidence to the contrary." ("insisted" + "despite" together signal strong skepticism)
