Can a news story be completely unbiased? Or is every story inevitably shaped by choices — what to include, what to leave out, whose voice to amplify? Where do you draw the line between bias and editorial judgment?

Think of a news story you've seen recently where the language choices seemed loaded or politically weighted. What words stood out? How would you have written it differently? What does the original wording tell you about the outlet?

Some news outlets openly declare their political position — others claim to be neutral. Which approach do you prefer as a reader? Is it better to know an outlet's bias upfront, or does that make you trust it less?

"Both sides journalism" — where a reporter gives equal time to two positions — is meant to be fair. But critics say it creates false equivalence. Can you think of an example where presenting "both sides" was actually misleading? Is balance always good journalism?

How does the country where a story is reported affect how it is framed? Take one major international event and imagine how it might be covered differently in the US, Russia, China, and your own country. What would each version emphasize — and leave out?

Do you think your own reading habits have a bias? Which outlets do you trust most — and why? What would it mean to deliberately read news sources that challenge your existing views? Have you ever changed your mind because of something you read?
